Connect an AI assistant (MCP)

Collec has an MCP server — a standard connector that lets an external AI assistant use your library as a set of tools. Once connected, you can ask the assistant to find, read, save, and reorganize things in Collec in plain language.

Where​

  • Web app: click the workspace name at the top left to open the workspace menu → Settings → Collec MCP
  • Two connector URLs are shown: one for your whole account (all workspaces), and one scoped to the current workspace only

How​

  1. Open Settings → Collec MCP. The account-level URL appears under Connect all of my COLLEC — this is the right choice for most uses.
  2. Click Copy URL next to the URL you want.
  3. In an AI assistant that supports remote MCP connectors — for example in Claude's Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector — paste the URL and connect.
  4. You are sent to Collec to sign in and approve access. After approval the assistant acts as you: it sees only what your account can see and can only change what your account can change.

Use the workspace-scoped URL (Connect only [workspace name]) when you want to restrict the assistant to one workspace — for example in a ChatGPT Project or a team agent with a fixed boundary.

What the assistant can do​

  • Search and read — search your library, list collections and folders, and read notes, file text, and the saved text of links.
  • Save — save one or many links at once, write notes, and save files by URL or from a browser download.
  • Arrange — create folders, move blocks, rename them or edit descriptions, and archive or restore blocks.
  • Reorganize a collection — the assistant drafts a new folder structure, shows a preview, and applies it only after you approve. The whole change is applied at once and can be undone.
  • Research a folder — read everything in a folder in one pass and save a summary note with clickable source links for every claim.

Limits​

  • Whether remote MCP connectors are available depends on the AI assistant and your plan with it.
  • Collec's AI usage (e.g., collection organization planning) may consume workspace credits. The assistant's own LLM usage is billed by the assistant provider.
  • Link text is what Collec stored when the link was saved — not a live fetch of the current page.

Not available yet​

  • Saving files you generate in Claude on the web (DOCX, PDF, XLSX, etc.) to Collec at download time. The server side is ready, but the browser extension update that detects the download has not been released yet.
